DISABILITY ACT

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 introduced three main duties with which providers of goods, facilities and services are required to comply.  These are:

First Duty from December 1996: not to treat disabled people less favourably for a reason related to their disability.

Second Duty from October 1999: to make reasonable adjustments to enable disabled people more easily to use any goods, facilities and services on offer.

Third Duty from October 2004: to make reasonable adjustments to the physical features of premises to enable disabled people to use those premises more easily for the goods, facilities and services on offer. Physical features would be such items as steps, stairways, internal and external doors, bathroom facilities and so on.

WHO IS COVERED UNDER THE ACT?

There are many forms of disability: physical, mobility, sight, hearing, mental, emotional, learning difficulties, disfigurement, chronic or long-term illness etc.

As a landlord or the owner of a self-catering holiday property, you are technically a service provider under the Act.
